It is when difficulties arise, in moments of crisis and suffering, that individuals, groups and communities must find within themselves the resources to move forward. They can do it by demonstrating elasticity and shock absorbing of the negative event to direct it towards different, constructive rather than destructive trajectories. This is precisely what “resilience” consists of, which in psychological terms is a process of creating the skills, new goals and self-confidence necessary to face a test, recover and come out of it strengthened. And it is no coincidence that precisely in this age of ours marked by uncertainty and emergency, resilience has established itself in current language and is receiving increasing attention in the field of psychology.
However, to avoid misunderstandings about its real meaning or overlapping of heterogeneous discourses, it is good first of all distinguish resilience from other human capabilities, such as stamina or simple recovery. It is therefore necessary to understand how it acts following certain events (i.e. stress conditions of various entities), which mechanisms and stratagems favor its manifestation, if it is to be understood only as an individual phenomenon or if its aspect should not be considered instead. relational and the collective dimension, finally what its traps can be.
Along this path, the book leads the reader to discovering the power of resilience as a possibility of transforming pain, trauma and defeat into opportunity, or fragility into strength, and demonstrates that it is possible, as well as desirable, to become stronger by regaining possession of the faculty to choose and rebuild one's existence after a moment of crisis. Without ever forgetting that resilient is not born, but becomes, with continuous exercise.
